And so I internalized the litanies littered across the only lot I could reasonably inhabit on the political compass: that remote, much-memed-on mountain top called libertarianism.
Thankfully enough, I avoided the ditch of Ayn Rand worship. I'm stupid but not stupid enough to fall for anybody who's that bad of a writer[1]. I painted well within the Hayek lines of respectability instead, eschewing gold-buggism, doom-prepping or the crass embarrassment of formal Libertarian politicking while nursing a chip of feral anti-collectivism on my shoulder.
It worked. Ish.
Then, at first slowly--then, rapidly--it didn't.

I went into the Iraqi war with full "save them from Saddam!" gusto, and one of my snarky descriptions of Berkeley campus anti-war fervor got linked to by Andrew Sullivan, then one of the patron saints of the pro-incursion nomenklatura. The ensuing decade-long debacle disabused me of several elaborate fictions.
2008 torpedoed several comfort blankets[2] about markets always being right and deregulation always being good. Most of the damage got patched up with elaborate circumlocutions: manipulated markets aren't real markets, ratings agencies are an elaborate shell game, nominal outcomes are impossible when Clintonite-birthed obscenities distort risk.
But Agent K's admonition, Carlin's line for the ages and a slow drip of behavioral economics all began registering. Maximizing everybody's freedom started sounding less and less like a good idea, much less ethical imperative.
I was lucky enough to meander through Denmark, Belgium, Sweden. No democratic-socialist commissars demanded my papers.
I got mind-fucked several times by Crichton[3]. The Lizardman Constant upset me. Moldbug's Nosferatu-like meditations rattled my cage. Even more dangerously, instead of stopping at 1984 and Animal Farm, I expanded my exposure to Orwell: Road to Wigam Pier, Homage to Catalonia. Goddamn socialist, that one.
Through the last few years, my time online revealed an Internet unlike playful territory of experimentation that I experienced as a teenager. Monetization and mass psychosis rue the day.
TFW I realize that various idealistic impulses (America land of the free! Liberty for all! Communism bad!) lined me up behind objectively, measurably, conclusively Wrong Things.

Second and third wave feminism were championed in popular culture because they radically expanded labor markets, leading to decades of wage stagnation and massively increased the purchasing power of those who control most economic consumption.
Intersectional orthodoxies have reached the power and reach they have now largely because they've been systematically championed as a cheap alternative to labor-based politics.
Environmentalism has been deployed as sword and shield for entrenched rent seeking, literal and figurative, excusing rapacious NIMBYism and boxing entire generations into a corner where starting a family or building generational wealth have a risk profile similar to betting everything on red.

Terry Glenn- WR, Ohio State: Round 1, Pick 7 (7th Overall)
Glenn walked onto the Ohio State football team, eventually earning an athletic scholarship. In his senior year, he was named a consensus first-team All-American and won the Fred Biletnikoff Award for the top wide receiver. Glenn made an immediate impact as a rookie, catching 90 passes for 1,132 yards and 6 scores. In 1999, he was named to his only Pro Bowl. During the 2001 season, Glenn was arrested for assault and battery on the mother of his son. Because of this, Belichick deactivated him for most of the 2001 season and was traded to Green Bay the following summer. He wouldn’t stay long as he was traded after a season to the Cowboys. His tenure with the Cowboys was not much better, as he was arrested several times in his 5 seasons there. After his release in 2008, Glenn retired from football. He has still had troubles with the law, including a DWI, grand theft auto, and marijuana possession. Despite his issues, Glenn was very talented and his highlights can be found here.
Lawyer Milloy- DB, Washington: Round 2, Pick 6 (36th Overall)
Before Milloy was drafted by the Patriots, he had some New England ties. In 1994, he was a pitcher for the University of Washington team that faced Georgia Tech in the College World Series regional- a team that featured future Red Sox stars Jason Varitek and Nomar Garciaparra. Over his 7 year career in New England, Milloy was a standout piece in the secondary, starting in 106 games and picking off 19 passes. Additionally, Milloy was named to 4 Pro Bowls and earned a first team All-Pro bid in 1999. As a defensive co-captain, he helped lead the Patriots to Super Bowl XXXVI, defending 3 passes against the Greatest Show on Turf. 5 days before the opening kickoff of the 2003 season, he was released and signed with the Bills immediately. Over the next 8 years, he’d play between the Bills, Falcons, and Seahawks before retiring after the 2010 season. In 2015, the Washington Post’s Adam Kilgore wrote a story on Belichick, who told a story about giving up his Super Bowl XXXVI hotel room to Lawyer Milloy
Tedy Bruschi- LB, Arizona: Round 3, Pick 25 (86th Overall)
My favorite Patriot of all-time, without a doubt. Bruschi played defensive line at Arizona but was converted to linebacker due to his size. He’d mostly appear on special teams as a rookie, but would get 2 sacks in Super Bowl XXXI against the Packers, just shy of the record 3 set in that game by Reggie White. In 1999, Bruschi got his first full time starting season where he’d be a key cog for the rest of his time. Several weeks after winning his 3rd Super Bowl, Bruschi suffered a mild stroke due to a small hole in his heart. Despite that, Bruschi rehabbed like hell and returned for a Week 8 matchup against the Bills. His resilience earned him the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Prior to the 2009 season, Bruschi retired from the NFL after 13 seasons. He’d be inducted to the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2013 and named defensive captain for the Patriots 50th Anniversary Team. Currently, Bruschi in an ESPN Analyst, where’s he has been very vocal in defending the Pats.
Heath Irwin- G, Colorado: Round 4, Pick 6 (101st Overall)
The nephew of legendary golfer Hale Irwin, the former Colorado lineman played 3 of his 6 seasons in New England. As a rookie, he wouldn’t earn any time on the field. In 1997, Irwin cracked the 53 man roster, appearing in every game. Primarily a backup, Irwin got his first full time starting gig in his 3rd full season in 1999, starting in 13 of 15 games that year. After the 1999 season, Irwin signed with the Dolphins, playing 2 of his final 3 seasons with them before retiring with the Rams in 2002. After football, Heath founded a commercial real estate firm in Colorado with his brother Blake. Fun fact, prior to the Gronkowskis, the Irwins were the last set of brothers to play for the Patriots.
Chris Sullivan- DE, Boston College: Round 4, Pick 24 (119th Overall)
The pride of North Attleboro, MA, Sullivan was a 4-year starter at Boston College. After being drafted by his hometown Patriots, Sullivan played 6 of his 7 seasons for the team, appearing in 63 games. After the 1999 season, he joined the Steelers for the 2000 season. He’d return to the Patriots as a reserve over the next 2 years, earning a ring from Super Bowl XXXVI. He retired from football after the 2002 season due to addiction and anxiety. For years, he battled addiction and was arrested for driving under the influence and possession of heroin with intent to distribute. In 2008, Sullivan finally sought help and has been sober since. Currently, he travels around Massachusetts, sharing his story of addiction to high school students.
Kantroy Barber- RB, West Virginia: Round 4, Pick 29 (124th Overall)
Barber played 4 seasons in the NFL. He spent his first 2 seasons with the Patriots and Panthers. In 1998, he signed with the Dolphins, spending 2 years with them and appearing in his only 2 career games.
John Elmore- G, Texas: Round 5, Pick 7 (139th Overall)
Elmore would not appear in a game for the Patriots, nor in the NFL.
Christian Peter- DT, Nebraska: Round 5, Pick 17 (149th Overall)
Peter wouldn’t appear in a game for the Patriots and was cut a week after being drafted. During his college years, Peter had 8 run-ins with the law, including raping a woman twice in two days. He was also accused of sexual assault and groping and was only suspended for a 1993 exhibition game. In 1997, he joined the Giants, where he’d play 4 of his 6 NFL seasons. In that time, Peter started 31 of 55 games and accumulated 2.5 sacks. After the 2000 season, the former Cornhusker spent 2 years between the Colts and Bears before retiring after the 2002 season.
Chris Griffin- TE, New Mexico: Round 6, Pick 6 (173rd Overall)
Griffin would not appear in a game for the Patriots, nor in the NFL. Currently, he owns a landscaping company in Phoenix.
Marrio Grier- RB, Tenn-Chattanooga: Round 6, Pick 28 (195th Overall)
Grier appeared in 32 games over 2 years with the Patriots, the only 2 of his career. He’d rush 60 times for 180 yards and 2 scores in that time.
Devin Wyman- DT, Kentucky State: Round 6, Pick 39 (206th Overall)
Wyman played 2 seasons for the Patriots, only appearing in 15 games over that time. He’d be cut in 1998. He’d enjoy an AFL career afterwards, playing with the San Jose Sabercats from 2003-2005, where he won Arena Bowl XVIII. After that, he’d play 3 seasons between the Dallas Desperados and Utah Blaze, earning a First Team All-Arena spot in 2007. In 2015, he was named as coach for the Texas Revolution, where he helped lead the team to the inaugural CIF Championship.
Lovett Purnell- TE, West Virginia: Round 7, Pick 7 (216th Overall)
Purnell played 4 seasons in the NFL with his first 3 coming in New England. During his time as a Patriot, Purnell caught 33 passes in 34 games for 149 yards and 5 touchdowns. After the 1998 season, he was traded for a draft pick to the Ravens and played in 2 games before being released. In 2001, he played for the Chicago Enforcers of the XFL under former Patriots coach Ron Meyer.
J.R. Conrad- G, Oklahoma: Round 7, Pick 38 (247th Overall)
Conrad wouldn’t appear in a game for the Patriots, serving on the team’s practice squad in 1996. He was cut by new coach Pete Carroll in the 1997 preseason before signing with the Jets and coach Parcells. He played in 12 games in his only season. After football, he’d return to Oklahoma and coach high school football. Today, Conrad serves as a sales representative for a strength training equipment company.
Ray Lucas- QB, Rutgers: Undrafted
The Rutgers QB was signed out of college and played 1 season with the Patriots. Lucas would sign with the Jets, serving as a backup for the first 2 seasons. In 1999, he started 9 games after Vinny Testaverde was injured. He’d throw for 1,678 yards and 14 scores, leading the Jets to a 6-3 record in his time. In 2001, he signed with the Dolphins getting 6 starts over that time before retiring. Currently, he is an analyst for the Jets on SNY.
Adam Vinatieri- K, South Dakota State: Undrafted
Mr. Clutch. Automatic Adam. Adam Bomb. Iceman. Without a doubt, the clutchest kicker in NFL history. Without the former Jackrabbit, the Patriots may be 2 Super Bowls short. He began his professional career with the Amsterdam Admirals in 1996 as a placekicker and punter before signing as an UDFA. During his rookie season, he received praise for chasing down and tackling Herschel Walker. In his 10 years with the team, Vinatieri kicked 263 of 321 field goals, 18 of which came as game-winners with less than a minute left. He also earned 2 Pro Bowl bids and 2 First Team All-Pro spots. He is still active today, entering his 12th year with the Colts, where he has since won a Super Bowl and earned another Pro Bowl and All-Pro bid.
